LOCATION
Assam,a constituent state of India,holds a unique position in the
country's strategically very important north-eastern region.The state
is bounded by Bhutan and arunachal Pradesh on the north, Arunachal
Pradesh , Nagaland and Manipur on east; Mizoram and meghalaya on the
south and Bangladesh and West Bengal on the west. The state is open to
the mainland of India on the west through a narrow corridor (about 40
km wide) between Bangladesh and Nepal. The state extends longitudinally
from 24'09' to 27' 58'N and longitudinally from 89'42' to 96'01'E. The
state has an area of 78,523sq.km.
PHYSIOGRAPHY
The present physiographic configuration of assam is geologically of
recent origin. It is characterised by diverse features such as
floodplains, marshes and beels, scattered hillocks,folded hill ranges
and old plateaus. The erosional and depositional process intensified by
heavy brainfall and frequent seismic movements play a dominant role in
shaping the physiography of Assam. However ,Asssam can be divided into
three major physiographic divisions:
1. The Brahmaputra valley
2. The hills of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar and
3. The Barak valley
